The Birds of Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the richest countries in Africa in regard to bird priliferacy and diversity. This is partly due to the country's conservatioin efforts that has seen it put aside a record thirty percentage of its land for wildlife and forest conservation. With their natural habitat no longer under threat, the bird population has increased tremendously and bird watching in this country is truly a joy to both the conservationist and the ornithologist.

Some of the best birding locations include the Usambara Mountains, the Udzungwa Mountains and the Uluguru Mountains. Other birding locales include the National Parks such as Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Serengeti, Arusha, Selous and Ruaha. The areas around Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika also offer the birder a variety of species not commonly seen in the mountains and the plains. Altogether Tanzania boasts of 1113 species including 29 endemics with the national bird check-list rising by 10% in the last 20 years.
