Mount Meru, Profile of An Active Volcano
Mount Meru is an active volcano located 70 kilometers (44 miles)
west of Mount Kilimanjaro. At a height of 4566 meters (14980 ft),
it is Tanzania's second highest peak after the Mighty Kilimanjaro.
Mount Meru has a spectacular ash cone in her center that has formed
in the old crater. The forest hosts diverse wildlife, including
nearly 400 species of birds, and also monkeys and leopards. The
Mountain itself is located in the small but magnificent Arusha National
Park and offers a picturesque trekking experience that cover a period
of three to four days.
Mount Meru is a serious trek and is often used as a practice run
to surmount Mount Kilimanjaro. A guide or ranger is mandatory on
every trek because of the significant numbers of buffalo commonly
encountered. There is one official route up to the summit and it
is well marked with huts along the way which offer simple, comfortable
beds. Unofficial routes on the west and northern sides of the mountain
are illegal. Acclimatization is important and while you won't need
oxygen, spending at least 4 days on this trek is highly recommended.
The best time to trek Mt Meru with its stunning mountain scenery,
cascading waterfalls and exotic flora and fauna is June - October
and December - February.
